7 Step Outline
1. The Setup
the movie starts off introducing the protagonist, Jake Sully, a paraplegic marine who’s brother has died therefore giving him the chance of a new life. The chance to do something he was not trained to do. He takes this chance, a challenge.
He is given a task, an espionage mission to infiltrate and integrate himself into the lives of the indigenous inhabitants of a planet, so that the humans can invade for profit.
2. Inciting Incident
He takes the mission like a soldier, ready to take any orders until he actually enters the avatar. His eyes are opened to the possibilities of this experience. He now has legs and a “new” life begins for him. He is filled with excitement.He starts to change.
3. Act One Turning Point
On his first trip to the forest he gets lost and is rescued by a reluctant native. She sees something in him, a good heart, and takes him in to her village. There the natives disagree with the move at first but then decide to train him and cure him of his “insanity.” He starts to live with them.
4. Mid-Point
During all this the colonel of the human army has got Jake reporting for him, obviously for an aggressive solution to the problem. He is also building a better connection with the scientist in charge of the avatar program.
5. Act Two Turning Point
His perceptions of things begin to change and the native culture starts to grow on him, he begins to like them. Soon he seems to prefer the avatar world to his own “real” world. He starts to fall in love. He stops reporting to the colonel.
6. Act Three Turning Point
The colonel has had enough, and the humans sick of waiting. They decide to attack. Jakes true purpose with the natives is discovered and they reject and kick him out. He is heartbroken, he loves Neytiri and his morals have changed. He decides to switch sides and break away from the human camp, doing what he must do to win back the trust of the natives. He comes back to them with more respect than ever and rounds them all up to fight back
7. Resolution
Big last battle scene, the indigenous people win and kick the humans off planet, leaving a couple that are trusted. Jake is permanently transferred to his Avatar body. They are left to rebuild themselves from the experience of destructive beings.
